All around the world, Hermanus is synonymous with "the best land-based whale-watching in the world" and visitors are never disappointed. Whales start arriving in June every year for the calving season from August to October. In some years the Whale-Watching season stretches until early in the New Year.

The town has its own whale-crier who announces where these magnificent sea mammals are displaying their breaching, spyhopping, lobtailing, sailing, blowing, grunting, all just a stone throw away in the ocean.

It is also possible to see southern right whales up close by boat. If you prefer to stay on land, Hermanus has many well-located cafes and restaurants where whale-watching can be enjoyed in the company of a good seafood meal and a cool drink!
